Travel North Black Girl is a story about a young woman's journey from growing up in the inner city of Kansas City to arriving in a remote native village in Alaska during the early eighties. The cultural impact of a foreign place and being a newlywed in an interracial marriage challenges her and who she will become. This book looks at the fears of growing into oneself and the triumphs of finding your own power. It addresses the complexity of race, gender, trauma, and child abuse and the powerful healing that the wilds of Alaska provide.
I've had the previous pleasure to read some of the published compilations of short stories by this author. And as an admitted bibliophile, I found myself wanting more. My wish came true with the recent release of her new book, 'Travel North Black Girl'. I found the descriptive writing of her journey from childhood to the strong Black woman she evolved into to be a riveting account of finding her purpose in life. Obviously talented, her skillful use of words painted pictures in my mind of each of her shared experiences. As I read and savored each chapter, I found all of my emotions being expertly engaged. Clearly, her honest self-observations bring purity to this book and demands a self-reflection of each reader's own life and experiences. This author is truly a generational talent, and 'Travel North Black Girl' is a literary gem.
