The pack is generally nice in every aspect. The main compartment is smaller than I anticipated. Also the zippers will support a TSA lock if you work at it. Overall it’s well build but now that I’ve packed in it for a 6 day tropical trip, I’d say this is a 4 day pack so expect to do a lot of laundry if staying longer. Also the 20L attached pack is really just a bag with two weak straps.I bought this for a 2.5 week trip to Europe. Pros: no problem bringing it onboard as a carry-on, loved the snap-on and off daypack, held everything I needed. Cons: the buckles are very cheaply made and the waist buckle cracked literally the 3rd time I inserted it, making it very difficult to use for the 2.5 week vacation. Also, the padding on the straps (both backpack and daypack) are minimal: was sufficient for carrying the full pack through the airport and on short walks from train stations to hotels, but would be very uncomfortable to carry the full pack for an entire day because of the lack of padding. Also, the chest strap on the daypack does not attach very well. As a result, it fell off and was lost very soon into my trip.Overall, it worked reasonably well, but in the future I'd pay more for a product that had sturdier components and more substantial padding.I purchased the 60L version for one bag air travel, and overall am very happy with it. I've owned a Thule laptop backpack for several years and the features and quality are outstanding. Thule puts a lot of thought into their packs! This bag has a lot of features - I won't go over them since they are in the other reviews and the videos. One big feature that I missed between the 40L and the 60L is that the main bag of the 60L does not have a laptop compartment like the 40L. That was actually one of the features that I originally wanted in a 40L carry-on pack. Instead, the laptop compartment is in the padded sleeve of the piggybacked 20L bag. At first I was disappointed, but then it was pointed out to me that with air travel, the main bag could go in the overhead bin and the 20L bag would be the personal item stored under seat, providing easy access to the laptop and other items in the 20L. It makes sense, and probably one of the reasons why Thule did this, as well as provide a front carry option for the 20L (to keep the laptop weight closer to your body).A couple of other things to note:The main bag has a substantial stiffening sheet on the bottom/back panel. When the backpack straps are stowed in their compartment, they need to be kept flat and not bunch up or overlapped. Otherwise they push up on the sheet, making the main storage compartment volume seem smaller.Capacity:I don't know how they measure 40L, I can only picture it as 20 2L Coke bottles, and I have a hard time believing it can hold that much. Maybe it can.If you use packing cubes, the large size Amazon Basics cube fits perfectly in the main compartment. You might be able to fit three of them.As an exercise, here is what I packed into it, in order of loading (disclaimer, this is not packing for an actual trip):1 Garment Sleeve (1 40S blazer jacket, 1 khaki pants, 1 dress shirt, tie)Eagle Creek https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00F9S84F6/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s03?ie=UTF8&psc=11 large size packing cube (12 medium heavy cotton tee shirts)Amazon Basics https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B014VBHL96/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=11 18" garment folder (2 polo shirts, 1 jeans, 1 microfiber golf shorts)Gonex https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B071D5ZF1F/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s02?ie=UTF8&psc=11 clear travel quart 3-1-1 toiletry bag 3/4 fullLermende https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B079GS4RSP/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o09_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1Misc loose clothes (2 boxers, 2 socks, 1 workout shorts, 1 workout shirt)Overall, this is a great pack that I plan to take on a 3 week trip to China. I hope to provide an update afterwards.I'll preface this by saying that I have not used the pack on a trip yet. However, I just got back from a trip and I transferred everything I had from my other pack to this one to see if I liked this one better than the one I had been using. The main reason I'm not totally satisfied with this pack it is because it's too small for my torso. My torso length is about 19.5", and the waist belt on this pack was at my belly, which isn't great for holding the weight of the pack. I'll list my pros and cons of this pack:Pros:- Plenty of room to hold what I needed for about 2 weeks.- Feels sturdy- Lightweight- Actually carries pretty well when loaded up despite the waist belt not being in the proper position - it was more comfortable than my last pack- I like how it's easy to buckle the outer straps and cinch the pack down to take up extra room and keep it tight to your body- It's really quick and easy to use the security features on this pack (i.e. securing the zippers)Cons:- I wish this pack had one more outer pocket for quick access, or perhaps an outer mesh pocket for stuffing in a jacket or hat.- It's a bit difficult to stuff in the stowable straps- I wish this pack were a bit more water resistant - I contacted Thule and they said it will be okay in a light rain, but it's not super water resistant and there is no water resistance to the zippers (I got caught in a downpour with my other pack on my last trip and I was extremely grateful for its great water resistance!)I am going to try the men's/unisex version of this pack to see if it fits me better - but that one does not have load lifter straps, so we'll see how that goes...Good luck in the search for the perfect pack!Fits well, easy to use, not too big and most importantly works as two a carry on and a personal item for flights. Large pack easily fits into smaller overhead compartments in smaller planes like a CRJ700.This Thule bag was purchased after a long search for specialised equipment carry. It had to fit Aircraft carry on specifications & had be carried on back and with very particular internal sizing. It didn’t disappoint. Plus points: main compartment security is better than any rucksack, with a padlockable zip along with 4 clasps which can be hidden. Novel but simple secure - top compartment for documents when unzipped reveals spacial & secure document flaps & zipped space for passport/keys etc. A very robust & concealed compartment for a laptop/tablet is located between your back and the main bag. Finally a bottle carry & pocket on the opposite side. The shoulder/chest straps are very comfortable with a thoughtful chest link & waist belt. Many straps can be stowed so that they’re not dangling, empty weight & colour & fabric stain resistance is perfect. Negative point: the main compartment - I.e. when in the backpack carry position this end of the rucksack does not feel as robust as other elements of the bag. I.e. the main bag contents slide into the bag end (downward) when carried vertically. I think perhaps the end should have been double walled or braced. (Granted there are 4 retaining straps/clasps to retain contents.)Notwithstanding this single perceived negative, it is a very robust & well thought out/designed bag which one could use (with a wee bit of extra thought/padding)for carrying cameras or such like (which would be cheaper than some bespoke bags). IMO it will demonstrate great longevity which in balance it will be cost competitive in the long term with other bags which will have gone to landfill long before this one. So I wouldn’t hesitate in recommending this Thule bag.First the good points:It has a hip belt, and the shoulder straps are good,The hard bit on top to protect glasses etc is a good idea, and that compartment has lots of good dividers,It's a carry-on size, and not too big to function as a day pack in my opinion, (I'm 5'9")The water bottle carry works well,The big back opening for the main compartment is a good idea in principle,The side access laptop compartment is quite good, would easily fit a 15in laptop if required, and also has a good divider thing so you could store documents or a tablet separate from the laptop. And the points I didn't like:The material feels very lightweight, I also got a Thule Subterra 34L and ended up returning the Landmark40 in favour of the Subterra. The Landmark 40 material feels lightweight and flimsy compared to the Subterra, it doesn't feel like it will last. Because it's light, the bag won't hold it's shape when empty, it collapses, whereas the Subterra doesn't.The front opening is a good idea, but it’s got some kind of flap over it all the way around, which looks terrible, obstructs the zip making access a pain, and as far as I can see, it won’t really protect the zip from dust or moisture.Because the bag material is lightweight, it collapses flat with nothing in it, so it is actually a little annoying to pack the main compartment.Because of the annoying flap over the zip, and the compression strap, getting into the main compartment is not a quick exercise if you wanted to grab say a rain jacket out of there. And, there isn’t really anywhere else to put your rain jacket inside the pack – you don’t want to put it in the top compartment because that’s the only place for stuff like wallet and electronics. The subterra 34L had a separate zip side access to the main compartment that you could use for stuff like a jacket or aircraft liquids bag that go and out frequently. This pack could get quite heavy fully loaded, I didn’t try it, but it felt as though it would slouch on my back, and there aren’t any top shoulder straps to put the shoulders in.Overall, the look of the pack is nowhere near as clean as the Subterra 34L, you will look like a backpacker carrying the Landmark 40, whereas the Subterra 34L is cleaner and neater and functions better as a daypack, although it is smaller.I really like Thule's move into luggage. I have a 'business rucksack' of theirs for daily use, which I love, so this rucksack appealed for weekend breaks. When it arrived I released all the straps, but couldn't get the main pack on. Released them all to the maximum and it went on - just - but the chest strap was cutting across my throat. (I'm 6'3" - so tall, but not unusually so).Looked at the product's labels, and it's a ladies rucksack! Asked my wife to try it on and it's perfect for her. (5'6")So... a bit disappointed that the description here doesn't include this fundamental piece of information. But my wife is delighted with her unexpected new rucksack.Thule top quality and function.
